RulesYou can pick one country for each medal in each event. If any member of that country's team earns the medal you pick, you get credit (3 for each gold, 2 for silver, 1 for bronze). If you correctly predict all three medals in any event, you earn a Sports.ws platinum medal, worth an additional 5 points. If you go with a long-shot, you might earn more (see about Multipliers below). Example: If you choose Sweden to earn the gold in the luge and any member of the Swedish squad wins, you get your own virtual gold medal.
Example:
If you pick Taiwan to get a silver in the big hill ski jump and they earn silver, you get your silver medal - if they earn gold or bronze, you don't get anything.
You can make predictions for an event up to 15 minutes into the competition, and can change them at any time before the event's deadline. Once the deadline for an event has passed, you will not be able to alter your predictions for the event. We make picking a little easier for you by supplying the number of athletes each country has entered in each event, as well as the most popular picks by other Sports.ws users up until the deadlines. Visit the rankings page once the games get underway to see how you fare against other Sports.ws participants. Winners will get a Sports.ws Olympics badge. The Team MultiplierYou won't receive extra medals if you guess team events right, but you'll get more points. The following events have a team bonus:
The Bonus MultiplierIn most cases, if you correctly pick the country that wins a gold medal in an event, you'll get 3 points (silver earns 2 and bronze earns 1). If you pick a long-shot, you might qualify for a "bonus multiplier". First, we consider a "long-shot" a country that hasn't been picked very much for an event by other Sports.ws users (less than 5% or so). Most people will go with a favorite, or a country that is entering a large number of athletes. During your picking, you can see the current popularity of each country in real time by clicking the "Site Pick Trends" next to the header for an event. The percentages change as people pick, and until the deadline is passed, it is possible your multiplier may change or even disappear. If you're left with a bonus multiplier when the deadline passes, you could qualify for extra points. If you have a bonus multiplier of "2x" and you win a gold medal, instead of just 3 points, you'll earn 6; a 3x multiplier would earn you 9; a 4x multiplier would earn you 12, and so on. Platinum medals are excluded from any multiplier bonus. Why are we doing this? First, we want to add a little excitement via the "big risk, big reward" payout method. A 5x multiplier will make cheering for your Sudan pick for the Ski Jump 5x more exciting, and 5x more ridiculous. Second, this will allow people to stay in the game until the very end, even if they have to rely on a big long shot. Lastly, even if you don't win your pool, making a stunning long-shot pick is almost as nice. Back to Home |
